Taxpayers are forking out £28million a year to keep Britain’s 78 Euro MPs on the Brussels gravy train. They can pocket up to £360,000 each in pay and perks without having to account for a penny.
That doesn’t even cover the cost of their chauffeur-driven limos, subsidised restaurants and jet-set junkets in the European Parliament. On top of their £61,820 salaries – the same as a Westminster MP – they get a daily £229 allowance each time they turn up.
That is £ 45,000 just for clocking on over 40 weeks.
They can also claim £700 to travel home, whether they drive, go by train or take a low-cost flight. There is £162,000-a-year for secretarial services, which some pay to family. And they get £39,000 for office costs, and a general allowance of £30,833 for “office management expenditure”.
Tory leader David Cameron sent a sleaze-buster to Brussels yesterday to lay down the law to his 28 MEPs. Giles Chichester and chief whip Den Dover were forced to quit after being caught with their noses in the trough.
